Connect to Innovate: Revitalising Entrepreneurship in the UK
A paper presented by Enterprise for Life® and NCEE® (National Centre for Entrepreneurship in Education)
Educational institutions are crucial in nurturing an entrepreneurial mindset, yet the narrowing of educational objectives and reduced funding have deprioritised enterprise education. The focus on finding the next “unicorn” overlooks the need to foster a broad base of entrepreneurial talent. Recognising the diversity of the business landscape, Enterprise For Life advocates for efforts across all business sizes to achieve lasting impact.
To re-establish the UK as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, Enterprise For Life – along with its social enterprises X-Forces Enterprise and X-Emergency Services- and NCEE are bringing together the private sector, policymakers, and universities. This collaboration aims to foster entrepreneurial mindsets, equip students with essential skills, and create robust support systems, transforming entrepreneurship in higher education. This renewed focus will benefit students and graduates and significantly contribute to the broader economy and society.
This initial report will be taken forward in partnership with industry and universities.

- Knowledge Exchange: Universities are hubs of knowledge creation and research. By collaborating with businesses they bridge the gap between theory and practice. Joint research projects, workshops, and seminars foster a rich exchange of ideas, propelling innovation forward.
- Access to Talent: Universities nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs. Businesses benefit from this talent pool through internships, co-op programs, and recruitment. In turn, students gain real-world experience and exposure to industry challenges.
- Shared Resources: Universities offer cutting-edge facilities, laboratories, and libraries. Businesses can tap into these resources for product development, testing, and prototyping. This symbiotic relationship accelerates innovation cycles.
“In today’s dynamic landscape, innovation is the lifeblood of progress. Entrepreneurs play a pivotal role in driving economic growth, creating jobs, and shaping industries. But where does this innovation originate? The answer lies in the powerful partnership between Businesses and Education. With our strong network, historical success in this area with the Education and Enterprise Taskforce, together we have the ingredients to make a rapid impact. This progressive partnership with NCEE emerged from a desire to do more to support individuals who, in turn, will have an impact on the economy and society as a whole.”
